Namna: Behind the Brand

Namna

Behind the Brand

Where Did It All Start?:

Two years ago Yesenia had the idea of offering an alternative approach to fashion in Medellin, Colombia, one that was more ethical and conscious of how sustainability is related directly to what we choose to wear.  As with any small company, they started slow, but were surprised at how well people received their designs and message.  In the last few years, Colombia has produced an emerging community of young creatives who are very committed to the values of slow and environmentally conscious fashion.  Namna has allowed Yesenia to be part of this community and form collaborations with some of its most inspiring artists.  An example of this is a upcoming project with @saturno_co, where they plan to use 100 percent natural dyes for the new collection.

How Are Your Clothes Made?:

Namna only works with natural fibers and almost all of their pieces are made-to-order to ensure quality and to minimize the excess stock that arises from bulk production.  The goal is to not let any material go to waste by using any leftover cuttings to make accessories and the bags that each piece is shipped in.

The Team:

They are a small company made of eight employees including Yesenia.  All receive a fair living wage, well above above the minimum wage in Columbia, set their own schedules, and receive bonuses.  One of Yesenia's proudest achievements has been to provide a stable source of income for the women she works with especially during these difficult times.

The Inspiration:

All of the clothing is inspired by simplicity, things that are a basic, timeless, and unrestricted by current fashion trends.  The goal is to create something you can always wear.  Linen is the preferred fiber because it's very durable but also incredibly comfortable, but most important it's biodegradable.

In Conclusion:

If you are looking for a truly ethical and fair trade small business to support and purchase through this is the place.
