Slow Fashion Season Recap #1

Slow Fashion Season - 2020 - Recap

06.21.2020 - 9.21.2020
_____

It has been one month now since the #slowfashionseason challenge started.  It's been a fun and inspiring challenge so far.

I am loving all the tips on how to shop, where to shop, and how to re-wear what we already own.  Can't wait to see what the next month brings!

Now it's time to recap the first month of the Slow Fashion Season challenge.

This recap will cover:

  • A quick refresher of what the slow fashion season challenge is.
  • My purchases
  • A recap Q&A
  • Some of my favorite tips

What is the Slow Fashion Season Challenge

Slow fashion season is three months of conscious fashion choices, such as:

  • Not buying new clothes
  • Up-cycling or repairing old clothes
  • Buying second hand or vintage
  • Buying from sustainable brands
  • Buying from local brands that may have suffered due to COVID-19

My Purchases

So far since starting slow fashion season on June 21, 2020 I have made a few purchases.  They are a mixture of second hand and buying from sustainable brands.
I bought some workout clothes and some basic tees.

Satva Living Workout Outfits from Poshmark -

Basic square neck tank top from Kotn -

A Recap Q&A

1 | What have you been learning about slow fashion so far?

That it's more than just buying secondhand or from sustainable brands it's really taking the time to think about each purchase you make and where you are buying it from.  Really asking yourself: Do I need this?  Does this brand agree with my values?

2 | Why did you make any purchases so far?

Part need and part want.  I only have one tank top in my closet which I've had for years now and I noticed this summer I was wearing it more often.  I wanted to get another tank in another color and one that was actually sustainable and ethically made.

3 | Are there any mistakes you fee like you have made?

I probably could have survived with what workout clothes I have, and waited to get some more sustainable ones later since the ones I currently have are in good condition.  Also, the recycled polyester ones I got are too small, and I don't like the feel of the material so now I am selling the set on Poshmark.  Lesson learned: don't ever buy polyester, even if it's recycled.

4 |  How do you feel going forward?

I feel good, although I am worried as fall approaches that the temptation to buy "new" clothes will be difficult to resist.  I want to try to buy no clothes for August and September but not sure if I can do it.  I did go one whole month a few times without buying any clothes and really want to repeat this.  Who's with me?

 Some Of My Favorite Tips
Tips to slow fashion season:
  • It's okay to re-wear - So often we think we can't be seen in the same thing more than once but that's not true.  If you love a piece in your closet and want to wear it over and over again there is nothing that says you can't.  Check out @_thethriftysisters they created a whole hashtag for re-wearing - #werewearwecare
  • Repair what you own - Don't just toss it cause there is a small hole in your clothes, it takes minutes just to sew it up with some needle, thread, and your two hands.
  • Up-cycle your clothes - I saw @simplymarynoelle and @spagrettystylejournal do this simply with a pair of leggings by cutting off part of the legs to turn them into bike shorts.  I was thinking, duh... why didn't I think of that.  I have been wanting some bike shorts so I might just have to do this with my leggings.
Be on the lookout next month for a recap of month two.
