Behind the Brand

Where Did It All Start?:

As a vintage resale shop with a friend, shortly after that Kate, the founder, was trying to transition into shopping more ethically, but couldn't afford the prices and struggled to find pieces that fit or represented women like herself.  So she borrowed her mom's sewing machine to try to make a linen top and realized she had a natural gift.  At this point her friend was ready to step away from selling vintage clothes and now Kate was ready to turn Fiber into something bigger.  Driven by justice and making a change in the world by means of the ethical fashion community Fiber transitioned into a brand with a one-woman team that creates and sells small batch clothing.

How Are Your Clothes Made?:

Everything is made in house in SoCal in Kate's home studio.  All fabrics are sourced ethically and sustainably.  The linen fabric is produced with no air, noise or water pollution.  The other fabrics are made in the USA and/or dead-stock or recycled materials.  The packaging is made of easily recyclable materials such as: cardboard and paper tape, with as little to no plastic use as possible.  Each garment is made to order, this allows for flexibility if any issues are seen with the way a garment is made or it doesn't sell well.  In that case, fabric can be used elsewhere or pattern adjustments can be made without having to toss a lot of pre-made items.  Zero-waste is the main goal so almost all scraps of fabric are used to make new things.

The Team:

Right now Kate does everything herself; she has a home studio where she receives the order, works on cutting the fabric, and sews it together.  As stated before, each piece is made to order which does increase the wait time but doing it this way is better for the environment as a whole.  This was a decision that Kate made from the beginning and plans on sticking with.  Soon she hopes to bring on a seamstress to help with production but plans on being involved with the production from time to time because as the owner of Fiber she feels it's important to do the hard work even if you don't have to and to stay connected to your customers.

The Inspiration:

Each piece stems from something Kate wished she had in her closet.  She wants to create easy staple items that are interesting, timeless, and make you feel good so that getting dressed is easy.  Each piece is created to last and are "size fluid" to accommodate a women's regularly changing body.  She never wants someone to wear one of her pieces and beat themselves up because they were bloated or it "didn't fit".

In Conclusion:

If you are looking for small, ethical businesses to support choose Fiber.
