Mareco: Behind The Brand

Where Did It All Start?

Growing up, Maria's mom would always tell her: "If you're going to invest in something new, make sure it lasts."  These words of wisdom stayed with Maria and helped her to appreciate the beauty in every detail.  After moving to London, Maria became an account manager for a fashion supplier.  She had this job for six years.  During that time, she saw all the good and bad of the fashion industry and knew she could do better.  So she did!  Maria created Mareco as a testimony to her personal experience, love for art and design, and conviction that fashion should celebrate life.

How Does Your Clothing Process Work?

Maria herself is behind all the designing, technical sketching, basic patterns, and fit samples.  Simple designs and good quality are top priorities.  Maria works with artisans who live in Sofia, Bulgaria, that she knows personally, and has worked with for years.  Everyone involved in the process is paid above the average wage for their country.

What Inspires Your Designs?

The first and only available piece right now is the Marianne dress.  The inspiration is taken from the 70s and the basic features of Victorian dresses, then modernized with a casual and comfortable fit.  With that in mind, this dress was made with pockets and removable shirred sleeves making it perfect for any kind of weather or occasion.  The embroideries are inspired by typical Bulgarian and Mexican folk wear.

Sustainability:

Maria's number one priority is to be totally transparent about all aspects of her business, even the ones that are not sustainable yet.  Being sustainable is a process, something that Maria will always keep working towards.  Each garment is made to order, meaning Maria produces your item only after you order it.  There are no wasted clothes, resources, dyes, or fabrics.  Even the leftover fabric ends are used to make scrunchies that are included free with your order.  Every collection is made from sustainable or eco-friendly fabrics produced from well-known sources with a range of specific certificates for quality and traceability.  Sustainability doesn't just stop with there, each package includes tissue paper made out of 99% recycled pulp fibers, and 35% of the electricity used to produce it is from renewable sources.  The polybag, round Mareco stickers, tags, and woven labels are all made from recycled materials as well.  What about the care labels?  To avoid any additional waste, when you order from Mareco you will receive the washing and care instructions via email since most of us cut out and throw away the tags.

Conclusion:

Mareco is a brand that inspires others to think creatively and sustainably about fashion.
